Ministry Beliefs
- Families Worship Together
We have grown accustomed to the presence of children in the service, and the children grow accustomed to being a part of the worship experience. No one will stop you at the door if you try to enter our service with your toddler over the age of 4. - No Systematic Age Segregation
One of our biggest distinctions is the absence of a youth pastor or traditional youth workers. First, these types of positions are not part of the biblical church model. The Bible is clear on whose job it is to disciple children… parents (Deut 6; Eph 6:4). All parents who are members of LBC are required to be involved in the planning, promotion, and execution of youth ministries (all have background checks). Second, these positions can work against the biblical mode and become at odds with parents. Parents who are relieved of their discipleship duties tend to become dependent on those who have taken over their job. Churches who wrongly assume these discipleship duties become consumer driven rather than gospel driven. Finally, these ministries have failed. We are losing 75-88% of Evangelical teens by the end of their freshman year in college. And as Dr. Alvin Reid has noticed, “The largest rise of youth professionals in history has been accompanied by a decline in youth evangelism effectiveness.” - Evangelism/Discipleship Through Homes
We teach parents to evangelize and disciple their children and their neighbors. We emphasize the ministry of hospitality, family worship, catechism, and family discipleship. Thus, instead of placing the burden on paid professionals to “do the work of the ministry,” we equip the saints to do it (Eph 4:11-16).
Basic Beliefs Regarding the Family
Families are falling apart all around us. The divorce rate is at an all time high; the birth rate has plummeted to an all time low. Children lack discipline and self control, and are falling away from the faith at rates of up to 88 percent (2002 SBC Council on the Family)!
We believe the church is a “family of families.” Our desire is to encourage families to be all God wants them to be, since the strength of the church is dependent upon the strength of individual families (Deuteronomy 6:7; Ephesians 6:1-4).
We are committed to equipping and expecting men to step into their God-given role as priest, prophet and provider in the home, and in turn, to lead their wives and teach their children in the ways of righteousness (Titus 2) Family takes time.
We are committed to “creating space” for families to spend time together (Ephesians 5:16). We do not offer a host of programs that run families ragged. We would much rather encourage you to spend more time around your family table enjoying one another’s company, or engaging in Christian hospitality toward your neighbors in your community, workplace, school, etc.
Basic Beliefs Regarding Worship
We believe that ALL of life is worship not just the musical portion of our services. We were created to worship 24/7. It can be bad worship or Godly worship depending on what we’ve set our affections on. Before God saves us, Romans 1-Romans 3:20 describe very clearly that an unbeliever’s mind worships created things. We suppress God’s truth and worship the creature rather than the Creator. On the contrary, when we have been given new life in Christ, we are given the ability to worship God in spirit and in truth. Genuine worship is not just music but includes all those things done for God’s glory (preaching, praying, serving, giving, parenting, etc…).
At its most basic level, Godly worship is setting our hearts’ affections and minds’ attentions on God, ascribing greatness to Him for Who He is and what He has done. It’s our response to the revelation of God’s character and glory!
Music is a powerful tool we use in our worship services. Music is indeed a genuine means of expression! Scripture proves that God desires music to be a major part of the corporate worship of His church body.
*Music can be a source of comfort and encouragement. (1 Samuel 16:23)
*Music is a vehicle for Christian service. (Psalm 100:1-2)
*Music is a means of praise and worship. (Psalm 150; Revelation 5:8-10)
*Music is an effective way to testify and express our faith in Christ. (Acts 16:25-30)
*Music is an evidence of Spirit-filled lives. (Ephesians 5:18-19)
*Music is a valuable teaching tool. (Colossians 3:16)
In our weekly worship services, you’ll experience a variety of songs and instruments. All of our songs are carefully chosen; we want the best of the best. Songs from church history: the most biblically accurate hymns of our faith. Songs from today: the most theologically sound and musically interesting offerings… not chosen because they’re the most popular, but because they teach solid scriptural truth. Our musical worship attempts to be Christ-Centered and not entertainment driven with the goal of glorifying God while edifying and educating the believer and testifying to those who don’t know Him.
Music is vital to our worship. Many people participate and aid us in leading our worship music, but the most important music group at Landmark is the congregation. We encourage people, no matter how their voices sound, to sing joyfully to the Lord. After all, it’s a joyful noise that’s asked for, not a well-practiced note!
